Mechanism of action of Bronchitol® (Mannitol)

The exact mode of action of Bronchitol is unknown, but it is believed to target the underlying pathophysiological airways’ mechanisms in cystic fibrosis by:

  • Altering the viscoelastic properties of mucus
  • Increasing the hydration of the periciliary fluid layer
  • Contributing to increased mucus clearance through mucociliary activity.1

Bronchitol contains the active ingredient mannitol.1 Mannitol is a sugar alcohol used as a food additive, a pharmaceutical excipient and an osmotic agent in oral and injectable products.2

Precision engineering is used to arrange the naturally irregular structure of mannitol into 3-micron diameter spheres. This helps to improve its deposition once inhaled as shown above.3
